Samos is one of the premier vacation resorts of Greece and it's located between Chios to north and the Dodecanese islands to south. Its name in Turkish is Sisam.
The area of the island is 468 square kilometers and it's 43 kilometers long and 13 kilometers wide. Samos is one of the main and most fertile islands from Aegean Sea. The island is occupied mainly by the Kerketeus mountain range, of which highest point is peak Vigla, erected at 1,433 meters (4701 ft.) above the sea level, near its western extremity, called Mount Kerkis. This mountain range is in fact a continuation of Mount Mycale from mainland.

With the neighboring islands Icaria and Fourni Korseon, island Samos is administered as part of the Samos Prefecture. The capital and main port is Vathy, most commonly called Samos. This island has an own airport - Samos Airport.
Ancient Samos was a center of Ionian culture and was renowned for its wines and its red pottery. The most famous building of Samos was the archaic temple of goddess Hera - the Heraion. During the age of the great migrations on the island came a Ionian population. In the 7 century B.C. Samos become one of the leading commercial centers of Greece. The citizens of Samos developed an extensive oversea commerce, they made transactions even in regions of Black Sea and Egypt. Also, their commerce brought them into close relations with Cyrene and probably with Corinth and Chalcis. About 535 B.C., when the existing oligarchy was overturned by the tyrant Polycrates, Samos reached the highest point of its prosperity. Its navy not only protected it from invasion, but dominated the Aegean waters too. The main city had many public works, schools, renowned sculptors, metal-workers and engineers.
