Kefalonia is the largest of the Ionian Islands and lies in the western side of Greece. The island is named after the mythological figure Cephalus, although some experts believe that its name literally means "an island with a head", referring to the island's shape.
The capital city of Kefalonia prefecture is Argostoli, which is home to one-third of the island's habitants. Lixouri is the second major city. Lixouri is situated at 4 km distance from Argostoli, across the bay, on Lixori peninsula. From there is a road connection to the rest of the island.
