BulletTravel to Ios, Greece

Ios is an island of Cyclades group in Aegean Sea, it belongs to Greece and it's a good travel destination due to its great beaches and all-inclusive hotels settled in exquisite vacation resorts. This island is hilly, with cliffs down to the sea on most sides, situated between islands Naxos and Santorini.
Port of Ios is located at head of the Ormos harbor, in the northwest area of the island. From there a bus ride or a 20 minute walk takes you to the main village called Chora or Hora. This is a white spoiled and very picturesque village, full of stairs and narrow walks, that makes it inaccessible for cars of any kind. The main occupation today is the tourism, so there can be spent really good beach vacations in well developed resorts dotted with all-inclusive hotels, restaurants, boutiques, bars & taverns, and even discotheques. Apart from port and village Chora, Ios has only a few small settlements - just a group of houses in the background of major beaches of Ios - Milopotamos, Theodoti, Kalamos, Manganari.
In the last few years some roads have been built and paved; a very scenic amphitheater has been created on the very top of the village hill. Still, cultural events rarely take place up there.

BulletAncient Ios

In the ancient times Ios had a small political importance. The legend say that Homer's mother was from Ios and he was buried there - today the inhabitants show to vacationers the ruins of the ancient town Plakotos, at the northernmost end of the island, where the rocky entrance to a tomb can be seen. Still, there is no physical evidence connecting this site with Homer...
On the north end of Ios is a ruined Venetian castle from the 15 century. Even if the island is very small, there are 365 churches and chapels, so you could visit a different church in each day of the year...
