Holidays in Santorini GreeceSantorini is perhaps the most popular of all Greek islands! Actually, Santorini is a small circular group of volcanic islands located in Aegean Sea, about 200 kilometers southeast to mainland of Greece. It is also known after the name of the largest island of the archipelago, Thera, and is the southernmost member of the Cyclades group. Its spectacular shores and beaches, along with the excellent accommodation in 5 stars hotels or apartments (settled especially in Oia) & fervent nightlife, make this island one of the top vacation spots for holidays in Greece!
Santorini has a giant central lagoon bordered on three sides by 300-meter sheer cliffs! The lagoon is separated by the sea on the fourth side by a another island, much smaller, called Therasia. The water in the center of the lagoon is very deep (around 400 meters!) and as result it is a very safe harbor even for the largest cruise ships. All ports are located in the lagoon and the towns on Santorini (from which the most renowned is Oia) are settled on the top of the cliffs, almost all hotels offering unique views with the navy-blue waters of Mediterranean Sea!
Holiday Attractions & Hotels in SantoriniAbout 3,500 years ago this archipelago was place of one of the largest volcanic eruptions in the last several thousand years! That eruption modeled the actual shape of the archipelago and its effects led indirectly to the collapse of the Minoan civilization on island of Crete, located at 110 kilometers (70 miles) to south.
The major beach resorts in Santorini include Fira or Phira, Oia, Emporio, Kamari, Imerovigli, Pyrgos and Therasia. In this tourist spots spend holidays most of tourists and consequently there are located the large majority of hotels and apartments for rent. The island features also a few very spectacular beaches covered mostly with specific black sand, representing very inviting holiday attractions.
From a distance island of Santorini looks like a massive snow-capped mountain dropped into the middle of the blue sea! Only when tourists arrive to the island see that actually the island isn't covered by snow and the white color comes from the typically Greek whitewashed houses, built on the top!
