Kos or Cos belongs to the Greek islands of Dodecanese Group, in the Aegean Sea, and is today one of the premier vacation spots in Greece. The main port and city on the island is also called Kos. This harbor is the main gateway to the island and also the main cultural center. It has traditional whitewashed buildings but also modern resorts, all inclusive hotels, villas, apartments for rent, numerous restaurants, and a few night-clubs. In the city is also settled a fortress from the 14 century, located at the entrance in the harbor, erected in 1315 by The Knights of Saint John of Rhodes. The ancient physician Hippocrates is thought to been born on Kos and in the center of the town tourists find the "Plane Tree of Hippocrates", a place where the physician is traditionally supposed that have spent a lot of time. City of Kos is also home to the International Hippocratic Institute and the Hippocratic Museum, both dedicated to the legendary figure.
During tours of the island holiday makers visit the main villages of Kos like Kardamena, Kefalos, Tigaki, Antimachia, Mastihari, Marmari, and Pyli. Other smaller villages are Zia, Zipari, Platani, Lagoudi, and Asfendiou. Kardamena is today a popular tourist spot where tourists from many countries spend beach holidays in a few excellent all inclusive hotels, luxury resorts, or villas.
