Corfu is one of the major Greek islands and lies in the Ionian Sea, off the coasts of Albania, being separated by this country by straits varying from 3 to about 23 kilometers (2 to 15 miles). The main town on the island is also named Corfu or Kerkyra (in Greek), is home to the Ionian University, and the main tourist spot. The name Corfu is connected to powerful water symbols: Poseidon, who is the god of the sea in the Greek mythology, and Asopos, an important river on the mainland. According to the myth, Poseidon fell in love with the beautiful nymph Korkyra, daughter of Asopos and of river nymph Metope. Poseidon brought her to an unnamed island and give her name to that place. They had a child that they called Phaiax, after whom the inhabitants of the island were named Phaiakes.
