Like many other Greek islands, Chios has been occupied by the Ottoman Empire in 1556 and enjoyed a relative peace, but in 1822 on the island was a massacre after a rebellion of the Greeks (around two weeks the Turk soldiers destroyed, burned an killed most of population). Chios joined to the independent Greece just after the First Balkan War in 1912.
