Holidays at Monasteries of Meteora GreeceSome of the most interesting tourist attractions on Greece's mainland are the Monasteries of Meteora. This are ancient buildings settled on high rocks, located in the northeastern part of the country, on the edge of the Pindus Mountains. Due to the religious and historical importance the monasteries are included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
The constructions begun in the 15th century as places of refuge in troubled times. There are four monasteries and two convents that are still active. After 1920 into the rock were cut steps, making the complex accessible via a bridge from the nearby plateau.
Monastery of Great Meteoron
Monastery of Great Meteoron is the largest of the monasteries in Meteora. It was erected in the middle of the 14th century C.E. and rebuilt in 1483 and 1552. The building serves now as museum and is visited by most tourists who spend holidays in Athens and this part of the Greek mainland.
Monastery of Varlaam
Monastery of Varlaam is the second largest monastery of Meteora complex. It was built in 1541 and embellished in 1548. The refectory of the church serves now also as museum.
Monastery of Rousanou
Monastery of Rousanou was founded in the middle of the 16th century C.E. and decorated in 1560.
Monastery of St. Nicholas Anapausas
Monastery of St. Nicholas Anapausas was built in the 16th century C.E. and is actually a small church. It was decorated by the Cretan painter Theophanis Strelitzas in 1527.
Monastery of St. Stephen
Monastery of St.Stephen is a small church and convent built in the 16th century and decorated in 1545. This monastery is located on a plain and as result it's more accessible.
Monastery of Holy Trinity
Monastery of Holy Trinity is reachable very difficult. It was built in 1475 and remodeled in 1684, 1689, 1692, and 1741.
