Halkidiki is located in the southeastern part of Macedonia Greece and is a large peninsula consisting of three smaller peninsulas - Kassandra, Sithonia, and Ayion Oros (there is located Mount Athos). Ayion Oros - Mount Athos
Mount Athos is situated on the easternmost peninsula of Halkidiki called "Ayion Oros". The borders of Mount Athos (which is a religious republic) begin at "Fragokastro" on the western side and reach cape "Arapis" on the opposite side. The natural beauty of the peninsula is unique, just like the architecture of the monasteries settled there!
Mount Athos is a self-governed division of the Greek state. Politically is led by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, but religiously is led by the Ecumenic Patriarch of Constantinople. The republic is divided into twenty self-governed territories, each of them with a leading monastery. The abbots of the monasteries are members of the Holy Assembly and exercise legislative authority.
