Travel to Corfu, GreeceCorfu, an island that belong to Greece, lies in the Ionian Sea off the coast of Albania. The island is separated from Albania by straits varying from 3 to about 23 km (2 to 15 miles). The main town of the island is also named Corfu or Kerkyra in Greek. This town is home to the Ionian University.
The name Corfu is connected to two powerful water symbols: Poseidon, the god of the sea, and Asopos, an important Greek mainland river. According to the myth, Poseidon fell in love with the beautiful nymph Korkyra, daughter of Asopos and river nymph Metope. He abducted her as was the custom among gods of that era. Poseidon brought her to an unnamed island and offered her name to the place. They had a child they called Phaiax after whom the inhabitants of the island were named Phaiakes, that was then transliterated to Phaeacians. The myth, centered around the element water, is suggestive due to the special ambience of the place.
Nowadays Corfu is a renowned vacation destination of Europe dotted with many all-inclusive resorts, hotels and villas.
All-inclusive resorts & hotels & villasCorfu is the only city in Greece surrounded by two castles and consequently has been officially declared a Kastropolis - Castle City - by the Greek Government.
The people of Corfu have a long history of hospitality to foreign residents and vacationers. Parts of Italian culture and cuisine have been absorbed here and are particularly evident during summer, when many Italian tourists travel to the island. On the north and east coasts are a few large and expensive all-inclusive resorts, hotels, and villas, which are inhabited around the year. This sides of the island have the majority of the all-inclusive resorts and, with some exceptions, the interior has relatively little well developed vacation areas with good hotels and villas for rent. Many peoples from Corfu forgot their traditional agriculture and live now from tourism. At the other end of the island, on the southern part, resort Kavos provides some excellent hotels and vacation facilities, particularly attractive to young travelers. They can enjoy here the Ionian Sea and practice a large number of water sports: parasailing, water skiing, diving, snorkeling and many others.
Ancient KerkyraIn a another famous adventure, Homer's Odyssey, Corfu or Kerkyra is the island of the Phaeacians, where Odysseus or Ulysses meets Nausica - the daughter of King Alkinoos.
The history of the island is full with battles and conquests, indicative of Corfu's turbulent history, which lasted until modern times, when the history of the island became one with the mainland's, after the unification with modern Greece in 1864.
