Chios is a small island of Greece located in the Aegean Sea at 5 miles from the coasts of Turkey. In the ancient times Chios was the biggest wine exporter of Greece. Amphora from Chios, with a characteristic sphinx emblem, have been found almost in every country that the ancient Greeks traded with, including the Gaul, upper Egypt and eastern Russia!
During the Turkish occupation,in 1822, on the island was a massacre after a rebellion of the Greeks. Chios rejoined the rest of independent Greece just after the First Balkan War in 1912.
